Community Health

A 50-Year Tradition of Community Care

The UW–Madison campus in the ’70s was ripe for social change, fueled by the civil rights movement and a desire for a more democratic society. Out of this environment, one of the first pharmacy co-ops was born: Community Pharmacy. Now in its 50th year, fueled by School of Pharmacy alumni, this pharmacy is sticking with its mission to provide compassionate care to all. Meet some of the alumni behind its founding and early years, and learn about its rich history on campus.

Pediatric Patient Safety

As senior vice president of quality and safety at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, James Hoffman (MS '04) has a big job. Over his 18 years there, he's implemented several initiatives, including pharmacogenetics, to keep young patients safer.

Through a new study, Assistant Professor Marina Maes aims to assess how the overturn of Roe v. Wade has affected Wisconsin pharmacists’ perceptions of their role in providing reproductive health care.

Improving Treatments

Tumor-Tackling Hydrogel

One-year survival rates for patients with glioblastoma are just 25%. Assistant Professor Quanyin Hu has helped to develop a new injectable gel that could significantly improve survival by stopping relapse before it happens.

Starting with a new treatment regimen for patients with hepatitis C, Elham Nejati (PhD '12) has been advancing therapeutics at Gilead for a decade.

Novel Superfamily

After first discovering a curious protein named Hobbit, School of Pharmacy researchers Sarah Neuman and Professor Arash Bashirullah have identified a novel superfamily of related bridge-like proteins that could shed light on disease development.

Professional Development

UW–MADISON PSYCHEDELIC SYMPOSIUM

Oct. 27 – 28, 2022 | Wisconsin Institutes of Discovery, Madison

Hosted by the UW Transdisciplinary Center for Research in Psychoactive Substances and the Division of Pharmacy Professional Development, this second-annual symposium is intended for researchers and clinicians in the areas of clinical psychology, psychiatry, pharmacy, nursing, and social work. (Continuing education hours available.)

The symposium will include keynote speakers, an overview of research happening on campus, and updates on the exploratory use of MDMA in the treatment of PTSD, and psilocybin for depression and substance use disorders, as well as barriers to clinical research among underserved populations and how to overcome them.

CMC Project Team Leadership Course
